At Our Lady of Fatima, we believe that physical education is a vital part of every child’s development - nurturing not only physical well-being but also teamwork, resilience and a positive mindset. As a Catholic school, we place the dignity of every child at the heart of our curriculum and understand that physical activity plays an essential role in supporting pupils to live full and healthy lives.

Our PE curriculum provides all pupils with regular opportunities to be active, to learn new skills, and to discover the joy of movement through a wide range of sports and physical activities. Whether it’s through structured games, dance, swimming, gymnastics, or athletics, we want every child to experience success, to persevere through challenge, and to grow in confidence.

We also place a strong emphasis on the importance of physical health and well-being, encouraging our pupils to make informed lifestyle choices and to value the impact of physical activity on body and mind.

Intent

We aim to:

  • Develop confident, capable and enthusiastic participants in physical activity.

  • Inspire children to enjoy being active and see it as a lifelong pursuit.

  • Equip pupils with a range of physical skills that they can apply across a variety of sports and activities.

  • Promote values such as teamwork, fair play, respect, and perseverance.

  • Support children in understanding the importance of health, fitness and how exercise contributes to a balanced lifestyle.

  • Provide inclusive opportunities so that every child, regardless of ability, can take part and achieve.

  • Celebrate physical achievement as a gift from God and nurture talents given to us.

Implementation

  • Every class from EYFS to Year 6 takes part in two high-quality PE sessions per week.

  • Lessons are delivered through a combination of class teachers and skilled sports coaches (Premier Education), ensuring consistency and subject expertise.

  • Children participate in activities covering the full range of the National Curriculum including team games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and swimming.

  • EYFS children have regular access to indoor and outdoor provision which supports the development of their gross and fine motor skills.

  • Children in all year groups have opportunities to represent the school in festivals and competitions within the Emmaus MAC and wider community.

  • After-school sports clubs, team events and themed PE enrichment days (e.g. Sports Days) further enhance children’s experience of physical activity.

  • Health education is integrated into PE lessons, helping children to understand how their bodies work and how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Impact

  • Our pupils leave Our Lady of Fatima with a positive attitude towards physical activity and the motivation to remain active into adulthood.

  • They demonstrate improved physical competence, including balance, coordination, strength, and teamwork.

  • Children are reflective and able to evaluate their own performance and progress.

  • Pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and recognise the impact of physical activity on mental health and emotional well-being.

  • Through sport, pupils develop resilience, confidence, and social skills which benefit them across the wider curriculum.

  • Our children show joy and enthusiasm in PE, celebrating each other’s success and recognising that all achievements, whether personal or competitive, are valuable.
